Senior School Swimming Sports

Room 6 competed in the senior school swimming sports this week. There were many events that they could enter including 25m freestyle, 25m backstroke, 25m breaststroke, 25m butterfly, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle. Some students competed in one race and others competed in many. 

Students from Room 6 who qualified for the finals include:

Hannah for 25m freestyle

Xavier for 25m breaststroke and 25m butterfly

There were also boys and girls house relay race where Koromiko, Karaka, Kowhai and Pohutukawa competed against each other. 

A few students from Room 6 represented their houses for the Year 5 boys race and the Year 5 girls race. The include:

Literacy Geniuses 

Room 6 have been learning about different language features including similes, metaphors, personification and alliteration. Here are a few of their examples inspired by our school forest...

Similes:

Alex: The bird’s nest is like my sister’s hair when she hasn’t brushed it.

Ricky: The tree is as big as a tall giant.

Kaiu: The fluffy cloud is as soft as candy floss.

Thanishka: The brown leaves look like they have been toasted.

Mila: The swaying trees in the wind sound like waves crashing onto the shore.

Tristan: The flax is as sharp as a legion of spears.

Metaphors:

Kyran: The leaves are dangling emeralds poking out of the trees.

Benicio: The cicadas are a non-stop alarm.

Isabelle: The clouds are moving puzzle pieces, merging together in the sky.

Dino: I can see so many flaxes, they are spider’s legs.

Maria: The tree branches are long skinny fingers.

Sasha: The occasional brown leaves in the trees are rusted garden features.

Alea: The clouds are cheetahs moving really fast in the sky.

             

Personification:

Lachlan: The wind kisses the clouds.

Hannah: The tree is standing up tall in front of me.

Jamie: The trees are ginormous rulers looking down on their kingdom.

Anu: The trees are waving their hands in the air like they just don’t care.

Xavier: The tree is reaching out to heaven

Hudson: All the trees are whispering secret secrets to each other.

Alliteration:

Eesha: The flax is flying frantically in the wind.

Lucy: The haunted forest has hundreds of humming honeybees.

Isabella: A brilliant big blue bird is standing on a branch.

Jenna: Five fantails are flapping furiously in the forest.

Luca: Don’t get too dirty down in the disgusting dirt.

Welcome to 2016!

It's the start of a new year and the Year 4s from last year have followed me into Year 5! 

I am now teaching a group of them in Room 6.

Here are my students for this year (minus one or two who were absent). 

What a pleasant bunch...

Although it's only Week 2 we have been busy learning a little about one another. 

We made a coat of arms that represents different aspects of ourselves... 

Each quadrant represents something about our lives (a letter to represent our name, symbols to represent our family, and images of favourite animals and hobbies)

We have also displayed a picture graph and made statements about our birthdays...

We are looking forward to a great year of learning 

(especially when it starts to get a bit cooler)

Our Monarchy

We have been busy this week making our annual gifts for residents of retirement homes (to be delivered next week). We decided to re-use an idea from earlier in the year (our gala canvas) and reproduced smaller individual versions. Have a look at some of the finished products...they look outstanding! I'm sure that whoever gets these will be appreciative.

There's always a drama...

Room 19 have had three drama sessions with Megan (the drama queen!) and had such a fun time learning about movement, freeze frame, chants, roles and levels.  We based a lot of the learning on a text called Tulevai and the Sea (a Maori myth). Victoria Avenue School Athletics Day

This week we headed to Millennium Stadium to participate in our annual athletics day. The weather was cloudy, windy and slightly wet at times but we managed to make it through the day relatively unscathed. Room 19 students competed in 4 main events:

• Long jump
• Ball throw
• 60 metre sprint
• 100 metre sprint

Many of us made it through to one or more of the finals including:

A BIG congratulations to Emison, who achieved 2nd place for ball throw, 3rd place for long jump and 3rd place for the 60 metre sprint.

Well done to ALL students who participated and tried their best.

The Year 4 classes went to MOTAT this week as part of our inquiry topic: 

Curiosity Can Lead To Innovation. 

We had a look at a variety of inventions and innovations throughout time.
